Trouble with View Modes in Select & Mask

I use the latest version of Photoshop CC. When I make a selection and attempt to choose my view mode, I have limited success. If I choose Onion Skin, On black, or On Layers, my selection is  not visible on my work space photo (at any transparency setting). It is only visible in the tiny thumbnail. If I choose Red Overlay, On White, or Black & White, my selection is visible on my photo. I've tried the reset option in the upper right of the properties bar...to no avail. Dave mentioned to someone else to try resetting the "Reset preferences on Quit" in the General preferences. If I try that, will all my preference settings revert to the default? Will I have to re-enter all my preferences, like IP address, plug-in info, etc?Carol

This should reset all PS preferences to the default set. Plug-ins may not be affected, however, and I don't believe it has any effect on IP Address. Command-Option-Shift(on Mac) or Control-Alt-Shift(on PC) held down while relaunching most Adobe applications does the same thing as that General Preference Reset on quit, and it's one less menu pulldown step to use the keyboard shortcut.

Here's a link to details on resetting Prefs in PS: Preferences in Photoshop

Plugin options may be affected, but I don't believe it disables them entirely.

I watched the Julianne Kost video several times and followed her method of saving off the preference settings to my desktop (although I'm using PS CC), relaunched Photoshop, then tried the Select & Mask properties once again. Still, the Onion Skin and On Layers views are not visible, except in the very small thumbnail, not on my desktop photo. Any other suggestions?
