Trying to make a retro dutone picture (noob)

I imagine there is an easy way to create these kinds of effects in Photoshop, but I am still learning and haven't been able to find the right tutorial (or simplified process!)

A gradient map adjustment layer will convert the luminosity in your image to colours, using a specified gradient. That can be a soft and gradual gradient or hard steps as in your examples. To get hard steps put the stops of different colours close together as shown below.

To add to what @davescm said, I would first use a threshold filter, maybe even use a brightness and/or Levels to make the image pop a little more.
