Type Tool and Locked Type Layer

I am getting a pop in error message that reads:

"Could not use the type tool because the layer is locked"

It would be more productive if the type tool just ignored the locked layer instead of trying to edit it. I have two type layers overlapping and the only way I can choose what to edit is to hide one of them. If the locked layer allowed me to ignore it then editing would have been lot easier.

Hi

I agree with Lumigraphics that the easiest way is to double click the thumbnail in the Layers panel. A second way, though, is to click with the Type tool in a place where the text frames don’t overlap. If you see dotted lines around the Type tool then you are about to create a new type layer.

Double-click the type layer thumbnail in the Layers panel to edit that layer.
