type tool doesn't work

I can no longer use the type tool. I click on the icon then moving on the image drag the frame as I have always done but does not appear to me the vertical bar of the characters. If I try to insert the text it locks for a few seconds. In the layer menu I see that the name of the layer changes according to what I wrote, but the text does not appear on the work window. I have a MB PRO 2018 updated to the latest version and I tried to reinstall PS but it does not change anything ..

If resetting the type tool doesn't work, reset your Photoshop preferences.

I downloaded Photoshop a couple of months ago and the Burn/Dodge/Sponge tools have never worked. I tried resetting the Burn tool as suggested but it has made no difference. What is the problem?

My type tool will not work. I have tried the suggestions above and there was no change. I tried unchecking the Use Graphics Processor in Prefereneces and that did not work. I tried changing the Advanced Settings for the Graphics Processer to Basic, but that did not work. I cannot edit existing text on a file made 2 months ago. HELP!
