Question

Type with 2 colors when working in 3D

All the tutorials I'm seeing for putting type into 3D in Photoshop are based on a text object being given a uniform treatment. What if I want text in two different colors—say FedEx, for instance, with part of the text in purple and part in orange? Must I do two different 3D layers?

Have been trying to figure this out on my own for days, so thanks for any help.

Rob

This is all immensely helpful, and my thanks are immensely late. (There's an explanation for that, but the story's long and tedious.)

Thanks so much, Dave, and everyone else!

You need to combine, or merge the two layers into a single 3D object

Michael Hoffman, who did this tutorial, is a regular poster here, as is Dave scm

Both will be notified of a mention in this thread, so please ask if you need more help.

    Hi

Must I do two different 3D layers?

That would be a sensible solution.

You could create this as two separate objects or...

Create  the text as a single 3D layer then...

Click on the front inflation material and in properties click on the folder symbol next to  diffuse and then click on  new texture :

Once opened select each letter and select and fill the layer as required :

    Save the material

    This will give you :

I hope this helps - shout if you have any questions
