Use clipping mask to delete intersection/overlap of 2 layers?

Hi all,

 

This is my first post here, and I haven't used clipping masks before, so I have no understanding of their functionality/limitations. The goal I am trying to achieve is to delete the part of a layer where it overlaps with another layer. Normally, I would just use quick selection and delete parts of the layer that way, or otherwise use the eraser. Either way, it is time-consuming, and I've heard that using masks can potentially speed this process up.

 

So, my question, is: is it possible to use a clipping mask to somehow delete the part of a layer where it intersects another layer? If so, would someone be willing to walk me through it, please?

Myra's suggestion is better. I don't think you can do what you want with clipping mask.

    If I understand correctly, it sounds like you would want to use a Layer Mask. Here's what you would do if you wanted the content on Layer 1 to hide a portion of Layer 2 where it overlaps:

    1. Make the selection of the area in Layer 1 that overlaps Layer 2 (if Layer 1 has transparency, then you can select the layer and go to Select > Load Selection to select the content on that layer).
    2. Select Layer 2.
    3. Go to Layer > Layer Mask > Hide Selection.
