using certain adjustment layers on smart objects

I have been doing a lot of trainings online in photoshop and am gettign more comforatble with using smart objects, especially doing bracketed blending.   I have run into an question in working with the Smart Objects. Using adjustment layers most of them work fine, but when I use the hue and saturation as well as color balance, my photoshop freezes up and I have to force quit and start from a recovered multi-layered work. Any thoughts on woudl be greatly appreciated.
