Using PS Artboard for Print Collateral?

Has anyone used Photoshop artboards for creating print files with multiple panels? Using artboards has greatly improved my workflow when working on window installations but everything I've read indicates this is only for digital work.

Wondering if I'm somehow making a bad technical choice?

I create a lot of large-scale window graphics that often utilize one image across multiple panels. Being able to lay the artwork out within artboards before bringing the panels into illustrator for type layout has been much easier for me. It makes more sense than my previous workflow which utilized multiple PSD, PSB and JPEG files. I haven't heard any issues being reported back to me from clients after graphics are installed so I can only assume the print quality has been acceptable. Would love thoughts or explanations of why I shouldn't be using artboards for this application.

The only issue I see using artboards for print graphics is overall file size.

Can you maintain a useable PS file with multiple artboards at a scale that will work for your usage?

If so then go forth and conquer, but at the first sign that PS is lagging due to layers, artboards, etc. I'd split it up.

The other thing that has prevented me (personally) from using artboards in print pieces is the "all my eggs in one basket" rule. If anything should corrupt - I'd lose all my panels and not just one part of the overall piece.
