Using Saved Brushes with Art History

Photoshop CC 2019

I am trying to save a brush I made in photoshop. I understand the steps.

1. Use selective tool to make a selection

2. Edit > Define Brush Preset > Save

3. Then, if I want, I can go into the Brush settings and customize

4. Then if changes were made, I create a new brush, give it a name and save

It becomes a new brush and has a 'brush' icon, automatically. If I don't make any customize changes it does not have a brush icon.

I noticed when I want to use the Art History Brush it does not let me use any brush with the brush icon. It defaults back to brush tool when selected automatically and does not stay in art history.

How do I save a customized brush, with customize settings, that does not default to brush tool so I can use it in Art History and if I wanted to as a brush?

Hi

Some brushes are saved with a tool preset (you choose that option when saving the brush) . That means that when you choose that brush it also switches to the tool that is associated with it - in your case the brush tool.

However, you can load any brush without switching to its associated tool by using Ctrl+Alt and clicking on the brush (Cmd+Opt on Mac)

Try option command clicking on a brush preset, to switch to the shape only

That will switch to the shape of brush only, but not the tool that was originally defined as . Often the brush tool is what most people define that preset with, not the art history  tool, which is what you want to stay in.

Don't use the art history brush, but some of the settings are greyed out, and others just seem to not work such as fading the size. Most people like myself never use the Art History brush, so may not be many experts out there. Please someone else help out if you have any ideas.

Wow! Been searching for this solution!!  Amazing!! It seems that I couldn't find anywhere about creating an Art History Brush preset that specifically identifiies it as such. But this solution works perfectly! Thank you!!
