V20.0.05 Update has Legacy Free Transform Option

Just seen this on the Photoshop Training Channel.  The latest Photoshop update (V20.0.05) now has an option to use the old Free Transform Shift key behaviour.

I pretty much go with all Photoshop changes, because I invariably find them better when I get used to them, but this one is still confusing me months after it was introduced.  It's the inconsistency that gets me.  I am OK with raster layers, and 'sort of' get it right most of the time with Shape layers, but it's using other modifier keys when dragging handles that sometimes gets me, plus there are other function that catch you out.  So this is one occasion when I am going to use the Legacy option.  At least for long enough to see if I have not had muscle memory messed up.      Anyway, it's there if you want it, and a good option to offer people who still post complaining about the change.

Well Hoorah, and thanks for the mail John Waller or I would still be cursing Adobe.

Sometimes I get the feeling that Adobe are just trying to think of things to fiddle with.  I've used Photosphere since v3 (20 years) and it's certainly evolved tremendously - and we all use different bits of it I guess  This particular tweak was utter madness. I am grateful to them for fixing it - but only in the way you'd be grateful for someone throwing a bucket of water on you after seeing you on fire! The power to change fundamental settings requires executives to show some restraint and intelligence; in business meetings it is easy for the quiet voice saying "Is fine, leave it ..." to be overlooked.

BTW: I put in a request for snap guides in Premiere and they've now done that too. Maybe thay aren't all doing pointless PowerPoint presentations to each other and eating doughnuts (or donuts!).

I've also used Photoshop since the early 1990s. One difference between veteran users and a company, is that veteran users (that includes me) often do things the same way for 25 years, while a company interested in staying alive will look around at the competition and if things have changed, they must decide whether to adjust. Because if you look at two of the more popular applications suggested as alternatives to Photoshop, Affinity Photo and Pixelmator, scaling proportionally by default (without the Shift key) is exactly how they behave: No Shift key needed. This seems to be the emerging convention, maybe because people are getting more used to mobile apps where there is no Shift key to hold down.

All of that suggests that the new behavior may not have been "utter madness," but a response to how users expect the latest, most modern applications to work. I still think Adobe needs to make more adjustments to the default behavior; because the default is still frustrating and inconsistent both within Photoshop and with other Adobe applications, and will continue to be that way as long as someone is not yet aware of the new preference setting.

Lately Adobe has been better about tracking and reporting on user requests. Your Premiere guide request was done partly because you weren't the only one, over 400 users voted for it. These days the Photoshop release notes often link the listed fixes and changes back to the original user requests on the Photoshop Feedback Site. So we should still request and complain, because they do listen, though there are probably still lots of pointless meetings there.

There is always this push/pull between a business's long-term strategic decisions and responding to what users want. At least it appears that they're trying to strike a balance, instead of going too far to one end or the other.

I was determined to be brave and live with the new transform.

But once a nice little checkbox turned up in Preferences...it was irresistible. I turned it on, and I suspect it will stay turned on. Call me an old fart, but I just couldn't get used to the new way. It felt...wrong.
