Question

Vertical alignment of 2 text objects

I'm observing the following funny behaviour in Photoshop CC Release 19.1.3, on Windows 8.1 machine.

1. Select Type tool

2. Type "a".

3. Type "p" in lower case, as a separate object from the "a".

4. Select both objects.

5. Click "Align bottom edges" button.

This should align the "p" and the "a". It does, although the "p" is aligned with it's descender, so visually they don't look aligned.

6. While both objects selected, click "Align bottom edges" again.  The "a" moves down one pixel.

7. Click "Align bottom edges" again.  The "p" moves down one pixel.

8. Click "Align bottom edges" again.  The "a" moves down one pixel.

And so on.

Any explanation please. Also, how to make the "p" and the "a" actually vertically aligned?

Thank you guys for your replies.

After restarting Photoshop, the weird continuous down movement by 1px is not present any more. I take this was a one-off glitch.

However the alignment problem still bugs me. Call it vertical alignment or horizontal alignment, I'd like to see all 3 text boxes on the same baseline. I expect "Align bottom edges" would give me this result. After all, this is how it works in Illustrator, although in Illustrator this command is titled "Vertical Align Bottom". Here is the result of this command in Illustrator (just a reminder, each character is a separate text box):

I expect that exactly the same icon should represent same action in Photoshop. However in Photoshop the command is titled "Align bottom edges", and the result of this command in Photoshop is also different from the Illustrator's:

With all respect to Adobe, this inconsistency between Illustrator and Photoshop doesn't look right to me.

Using top alignment as advised by davescm is not an option either:

Any more insightful ideas? How to align? Why is it different in Illustrator?

Just can't believe that manual alignment is the only option.

    Thanks!

Why is it different in Illustrator?

    Vectors, pixels.

Illustrator and Photoshop are hugely different applications (the one vector based the other one pixel based, even if both have features crossing that distinction) and Photoshop is certainly not the ideal program for type work.

For Photoshop a Type Layer, even as it maintains edibility, is still a Layer made up of pixels.

Once again: For point text automating alignment should be possible with Scripting.

    5. Click "Align bottom edges" button.

This should align the "p" and the "a". It does, although the "p" is aligned with it's descender, so visually they don't look aligned.

It is aligned and that’s what you told Photoshop to do.

If you want the baseline to align do it either manually or (assuming you created Point Text) this should be able to be automated with a Script.

Like davescm I could not reproduce the continuous downward aligning so far.

    Hi

I can replicate everything up to step 5 at which point I get this:

After that with repeated pressing I get no extra movement in either characater (that you describe in steps 6 to 8).

What exact font and size are you using?

To align those particular characters horizontally I would use "align top edges"
