Water spot removal

I am trying to remove water spots, and not sure the procedure.

I have two jpg's that are almost identical, one with spots and one without.

I watched a video that talks you through taking these two jpg's and creating a layered image in PS. Then aligning them, creating a layer mask and using the black brush tool to eliminate the water spot and let the other layer without the water spot show through.

I cannot get it to work, and the paint brush simply paints black like it should.

I would be grateful if someone could explain how I can remove water spots with this or another procedure.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

It sounds as though you are painting in black on the image rather than on the mask. Click on the mask in the Layers panel. It will show a frame around it indicating that is where the work will be done, Then paint in black to reveal the area in the layer below it.

I don’t understand.

If you have the image without the water spots what is the damaged version good for?

Please post meaningful screenshots.

I suspect you should be painting on a Layer Mask instead of the Layer.
