Illustrator is vector and doesn't work in Pixels Per Inch (ppi) except for raster effects, such as Gaussian blur. The web doesn't care how many pixels are in an inch, but it has to use something.

You haven't answered either of my two questions yet.

In short, I want to make a banner for my website in Illustrator, the category banner size is 540x734, when I use these dimensions, my designs appear distorted, the image quality gets worse after saving.

Since you are creating the banner in Illustrator, is there a reason you are bringing it into Photoshop or can you skip that step? Try this:

In Illustrator:

  • create an artboard that is 540px x 734 px and create your banner
  • file > export to .png

If it still looks distorted, share these screenshots:

  • the Illustrator version
  • the settings you use for the PNG
  • the PNG itself

I open 72 dpi in photoshop (website standard) but the image is distorted, the same happens when I make illustrator.

It's not clear: are you starting with another size and resizing? Or starting with an image that is 740px x 500px? Are you looking at the image zoomed in or are you zoomed to 100%?
