What happened to manipulating curve line segments directly?

It used to be that when I dragged a curve line segment using the direct selection tool that it would adjust that curve segment while leaving the adjacent anchor points constrained. Basically sliding the nearby handle points in or out but not changing their angles. This had the nice effect of leaving the neighboring curve segments unaffected. But after a recent Photoshop update, dragging a curve line segment now changes the anchor point angles which totally messes with neighboring curves. I've tried to find modifier keys or alternate mouse button clicks to keep the anchor points constrained while dragging a curve line segment, but no luck so far. Can anybody tell me where this functionality went or at least why they took it away? I end up needing to fix the other curves all the time now.
