What has happened to the 'Content aware' option on the crop tool?

What has happened to the content aware option on the crop tool. There are  few icons on the top bar but I can't see what they do. And I'm sure that when I used to crop bigger than the original the file was automatically flattened. Now I have to flatten it, then use the rectangular marquee tool and delete with 'Content Aware'.

It's there in the Options bar, but greyed out until you activate the crop by dragging a handle

It sounds like you have the narrow options bar selected in preferences -Workspace- Condensed

Uncheck it, restart Photoshop, and you will see words instead of icons
