Yes, the mesh is a byproduct of how tesseleation spheres work. It's an intrinsic function of how the math works. It's just not very pronounced in the image due to this being a level 12 subdivision or even higher, making the polygons very small. I can see the "poles" of the original icosahedron, though, where the directions of the polygons change (very noticable in the bottom right corner), so I really don't think there's more going on than that like creating the sphere with a repeating element.

It's a tesselation sphere with a high number of levels/ iterations and a turbulence displacement deformer thrown on created in a 3D program.

Shape name? I do not understand what you want to ask. This looks like irregular ball with mesh coat.
