When I open a photo in Photoshop CC 2017 I only see a checkered background. How do I see my photo?

    I kind of agree with Norman, that it maybe a graphics card issue. If unchecking the graphics processor does not work, the next step is to update the video card drive, and if that is already up to date, next would be to reset the preferences.

    ctrl-k on widows or cmd-k on mac to bring up preferences and scroll to bottom to click the reset preferences on next start.

    A jpg does not support transparency therefore you should not be seeing a checkerboard and with the layers panel stating the layer is a background layer is another dead give away.

    As it was said above, if you can see in the layers panel, then you should see it in the document.

    Let us know what worked if any.

    Considering the fact that the image appears in the Layers panel but not in the work area, have you tried unchecking "Use Graphics Processor" in Preferences?

    Could you capture your entire screen with the layers panel open and any layers that are collapsed, expand them so we can see them.
