When I try to paste an image, it creates a curve adjustment layer instead

Please help! I've been trying to paste an image in a new layer on my project, and it keeps creating a curve adjustment layer instead without pasting my image. I made some curve layers earlier, and clipped them to some other layers- but the new layer is above all of them and shouldn't be affected. How can I fix this? I can't paste any image at all.
