Question

When was "as a Smart Object" filename suffix removed?

I'm trying to find out in what PC version of Ps or ACR did Adobe remove the "as Smart Object -(#)" suffix that was added to images opened as Smart Objects from ACR? Did that end right after CS6 or was it in one of the 39 versions of Ps that followed it?

I've searched through numerous "What's New on Photoshop" web pages but have yet to find the one where that change was announced.

Thanks to anyone who can remember.

I'll need to test, the last time that I recall it coming up was when I wrote a script to rename the open docs to remove the -#:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/stop-photoshop-adding-number-suffixes-to-documents/m-p/12767371

Photoshop 2024 (26.6.0) /ACR (16.2.1.1767):

The same raw opened as image:

1st instance: Filename.dng

2nd instance: Filename-2

(First doc still open)

The same raw opened as smart object:

1st instance: Filename-1

2nd instance: Filename-3

Close both open docs, open the raw again:

Filename-4

Conclusion:

Nothing has changed!

So ... it's been like that for the past 8 years ... (yikes <g>) Thank you for the info. I confess that I still use CS6 for my own work (perpetual license still working fine on a PC) and only when I recently worked with Smart Objects with the current version did I notice the SO naming change as well as the strange filename suffix that increments up when the same single RAW image is opened again as a SO. I thought, like with so many other legacy options in the Preferences, that the old SO naming method could be restored. But alas no.

I believe Photoshop CC 2015 (ps ver 16) was the last version to put the "as a Smart Object" filename suffix.

Most likely a change like that was never put on the "What's New in Photoshop" web page.
