Yup, as Mark states, work non-destructively.

  1. Choose the ‘Quick Selection Tool’ from the tools panel. It's the best tool for basic background removals. Selecting the ‘Quick Selection Tool’ opens a context-sensitive menu at the top of your workspace. Before you begin, pick‘Add to Selection.’ You may need to open the ‘Brush Picker’ and adjust the brush size depending on the size of your photo.
  2. Then, click and drag your mouse on the unwanted background. A selection will appear and grow as you gradually work around your subject.
  3. With the selection complete, right click within the marching ants and select ‘Refine Edge’ from the pop-up menu. The Refine Edge dialogue will help you fine-tune your selection for a better result. First, change the View Mode to ‘On White’ or any option that sharply contrasts with your selection. Thus, you will see the parts of your edge that need the most help.
  4. Review your result. Right-click within your selection and pick Layer Via Copy. Your selection will assign itself to a new layer, sans background, without having edited your original photo.

Regardless of which selection technique you use to isolate the pixels you want to keep, use a Layer Mask after the selection rather than deleting the pixels. This gives you the ability to adjust how much you're cutting out from the background afterwards by refining in various ways.

Hi Mike,

Make a really good expert-level selection of your foreground and then apply a layer mask to non-destructively hide the background.

It depends on the kind of image and your Photoshop skills. It’s important to work non-destructively.

Lynda.com had a number of online video tutorials showing the various ways to do ‘cut-outs’. You can get a 30-day free trial.

Most likely you will need to work manually like to trace subject using Pen tool and perhaps to use and some other selection techniques. From your initial description I can ques that probably manual work will be solution. Can you post some example so we can give you more precise instructions.
