which steps I have to take to choose only black color in gradient?

I got a problem with choosing only black color in gradient to make opacity of 40% etc.

can someone tell me which steps I have to take to choose only black or any other colors in gradient.

Sounds like you want Foreground to Transparent:

You can also double click the gradient in the options bar, to launch the gradient editor. Move the opacity stops here (color stops along the bottom):
