Why does feathering work so psychotically?

One day it woerks fine, the next day, the edge still looks hard, and unfeatherd. I do the exact same thing, and get two different results. Insane.

What do you actually mean by the term »feathering tool«? The Blur Tool, Select > Modify > Feather, Mask feathering, …?

Help us to help you. In addition to what @c.pfaffenbichler asked for, give us details:

  • Are you apply feathering to a selection? Before or after making it? How?
  • What is the amount of the feathering?
  • To a mask as CP asked?
  • What is your zoom level?
  • Same or different documents?
  • What is the size of the document(s) in pixels?

    Greetings:

     

    Thank you for your feedback. I have resolved the issue. After applying the feathering in PS, I import the image into another app and use a blur brush to blur the edges, a necesary step because, apparently,  the feathering tool in PS is defective. No work around I have tried in PS works.

    As you have not provided a menaingful description of what you are actually doing in Photoshop I suspect you are mistaken. 

    Could you please post screenshots taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, Properties, …) visible?

      Could it be that you observed different images at hugely different magnifications, so that the effect of identical settings would appear differently on screen?

        What would you call a complaint that is devoid of meaningful information that would allow for recreating the issue? 

        Just to make sure: You are talking about the Feather setting for Layer Masks and Vector Masks as set in the Properties Panel? 

         

        Could you please post screenshots taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Properties, Options Bar, …) visible to illustrate the two differing results?
