Question

Why does Photoshop crop my images (CR2 file) when I open it?

Hi there,

I took some RAW photos on a Canon EOS 3000D and when viewed on a computer they are in a CR2 file format. Whenever I open these on Photoshop they always get cropped automatically. Does anybody know what is going on here and anyway to fix this issue?

I am running Adobe Photoshop v 22.5.1 on a Windows computer.

Thanks!

I am having similar problem.  Photoshop crops a top part of my Canon camera raw files when I open them.  The bottom part is left alone.  Is there some way I can fix this?

If the last used setting in Adobe Camera Raw included a crop of the image and you are not using the default settings it is possible that ACR is remembering this last crop setting. Be sure to set the Settings back to default or your saved default or custom setting without any crop included.

You can not open RAW2 file directly in Photoshop. File must go through Camera Raw plugin before it is open in Photoshop. When Camera Raw window opens take a look at the link in the middle bottom of the screen. What dimensions you see there? Original file dimensions or "cropped" actually smaller dimensions?

The Camera RAW plugin shrunk the image's dimensions automatically. Here is a comparison between the original file dimensions and when in Camera RAW:

Sorry that I can't put the whole Camera RAW window, the image is a portrait and I don't want to post the person without his permission.

In Camera Raw window click on link in the middle bottom, ensure that Workflow tab is active then capture screenshot of ACR Preferences window and post it here.

What Aspect Ratio and size are the RAW images being cropped to. What area of the CR2 image is the crop located? Is it Photoshop or ACR that is doing the cropping?

I use Windows 10 Photoshop 22.5.1 and ACR 13.4   My CR2 image are not cropped by default.

Try resetting You Photoshop and ACR Preferences.

The RAW file has dimensions of 5202x3464 and then it shrinks to 5184 x 2916

The 5184 seens right  what is cropping it Photoshop, ACR, a Plug-in, an Event Handler it is not even a 3:2 Aspect Ratio it a 16:9 aspect ratio.  Something is cropping your images for a HDTV aspect ratio..  Have you reset all your Photoshop and ACR preferences and photoshop tools.  Does your Camera have a 16:9 aspect ratio getting the you may have set?,

Image Resolution 5184 x 3456 (L) 3456 x 2304 (M) 2592 x 1728 (S1) 1920 x 1280 (S2) 720 x 480 (S3) 5184 x 3456 (RAW)

It does you may have it set in your Camera

The RAW file should still be 3:2 so something  may be  cropping for the  Cameras 16:9 setting. The Cameras Jpeg files will be the 16:9 Aspect Ratio though.

Hi!

How do you import and open your files?

What size are they cropped to?

Do you open your files in Camera RAW? Or directly into Photoshop? And, one other question--if into Photoshop, what tool is selected when you open them in PS?

If you could give us a little more information, we'll be able to helpyou more effectively.

I just open Photoshop and then either drag the image to the app or open it through the app

It automatically opens up Camera RAW but the image's dimensions is already "cropped"/has shrunk before doing any editing.
