Question

Why Is The Photoshop 2017 Update Lagging?

  • November 10, 2016

SYSTEM:
Windows 10

16GB Ram

Dual Core i7

2 internal Samsung SSDs (1 dedicated to scratch)

Nvidia GeForce GT 745m (current drivers)

Extensis Suitcase Fusion 7 (current version)

My system has been fully optimized to use Photoshop as I have been using the program for over a decade.

Hey Guys,

Photoshop 2015.5.1 was working just fine. I updated to 2017 and every mouse movement or action in Photoshop was lagging.

I called tech support and they recommended unclicking the "Use Graphics Processor" under Settings>Performance. There was still heavy lag.

I have a supported graphics card and I use artboards often so not using my graphics processor is not an option.

After 3 phone calls to tech support and a half day wasted, I went back to 2015.5.1. It now works fantastic once again.

Is this a known issue? I have only seen 1-2 posts on this and they all sound a bit different.

When will it be safe to update to 2017?

Thank you!

Sorry, forget my reply above...it's not accurate.  Issue is NOT resolved.  It's a major bug that needs fixing.  Until then, CC 2015.5.

    Hi friends,

I believe I have found a way to resolve the issue...though it's not a permanent fix.

Turn off Font Preview in Photoshop preferences

    • Choose Type > Font Preview Size.

    • Select None.

    I found this option at:

Troubleshoot fonts issues in Adobe Photoshop CC, 2015, 2014, CS6, CS5

You'll note, you no longer have font previews, but I can live with that for now, as I know the fonts I use, and you can sort of preview them live on the text layer itself.

I will also dig through my fonts and see if I can find the one that may be corrupt or causing the issue, but I think this explains why some people are having this issue and others are not, and that it happens on both Windows and Mac.

Now, CC 2017 is flying faster than ever!  Hopefully Photoshop will read these posts and resolve this issue...as well as give us a real way to preview these fonts in the workspace with our own sample text.

    Hi

Just to be sure, have you updated to Extensis Suitcase Fusion 7 Version 18.2 ?

    Version 18.2

    • Added auto-activation plug-in and Extensis Font Panel support for Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop CC 2017.
    • Added auto-activation plug-in support for Adobe InCopy and After Effects CC 2017.

No worries, there are a lot of users that have the same issue. My issue is related on Type Tool. It works just fine with Myriad Pro, but awful, with all the rest, including windows fonts. I reseted everything to standard Windows fonts, but nothing seems to work. I did all the steps Adobe recommends in order to improve performance, etc but no change. It`s omething wrong with this version, I`m pretty sure about it. Let`s hope they will fix the bug and will update the version.

    Thanks

I am not sure what you have already taken but have you reset the preferences using the three methods?

    1) Pressing CTRL+ALT+Shift keys and clicking on the Photoshop shortcut;

    2) Pressing CTRL+SHIFT+Windows Key and pressing the Short cut key;

    3) Going to Edit >> Preferences >> General      and then looking for something like this:

I can assure you that 2017 works fine on a windows system.  There are some problems on Apple MAC but I don't use that system and I have never liked Apple MAC machines.

After using the third method, you need to close Photoshop and then restart it to recreate new preferences file.

there is also a fourth method and that is to delete the files manually using Windows explorer but the above methods does almost the same thing.

    Good luck.

Hi there and thank you for your reply.

I tried all 3 methods you mentionated above but no change. The Type tool works normal when I use Myriad Pro font. When I try to switch between fonts or after I select a different font, and I try to select a text paragraph, everything works with a big lag. I tried all the methods I  found on this forum, or on internet regarding Photoshop Type Tool issues. Even restored font folder to original Windows fonts. The same issue. Nothing except Myriad Pro works ok. Attached you have my performance settings screen. I tried to disable GPU, but no change. However this is not an option. I tried it on Windows 10, 8.1 and Windows 7 on 3 different computers. All of them high end. Can you explain me, why in the world, have the same issues? I would understand, this 2017 is not 100 % compatible with Windows 7 or 8.1 but 10? It has the exct same behaviour. No difference. I will update tomorrow to 16 GB of RAM, but I don`t expect improvements, as on Windows 10 I already have 16 GB and an I7 processor, and it`s the same.

    Thank you!

Have you restarted the machine after 2017 installation?  Windows 10 always require that you restart after any updates, upgrades or installation of any APPS.  Restart is not the same as switching off and switching on the machine as you may know this.  So please restart once again to see if anything improves.

    Good luck.
