Question

Why PS mark my Tiffs as "saved" afetr I exported in JPEG?

For years my workflow in PS was: open Tiffs with layers, edit, export in JPEG, close all, save before closing. It was perfect.

Now, after I export my Tiffs, opened files are marked as saved. So I have to enter EACH file, one by one, and fake an edit, then I can save them all.

EVERY. TIME.

What’s the point of changing the logic fo faile saving? Is there a way to come back to the old logic?

Also reproducible on Windows 11 with both Photoshop 2026 (27.5) and the 26.7 Photoshop Beta.

I’m am able to reproduce the issue here on macOS Sonoma 14.8.5 with Photoshop 2026 (27.5)

That is, when saving a tiff file with unsaved changes using File>Export As, the file is indicated as

saved, which should only happen if the file is saved to another file format that supports layers, etc like psd, psb or tiff.

So far, it only seems to occur with .TIFF files when using File>Export As set to any format.

Doesn’t happen when using File>Save As or File>Export>Save for Web.

I also tried under Photoshop 2026 Settings>File Handling turning on/off Enable Legacy “Save As”, but that didn’t make any difference.

Do you use Export As or Save For Web? There’s a difference between them.

    • With Export As, the original file can just be closed out after the export, without any saving. Just hit the X to close it, that’s it.
    • With Save For Web, export metadata are written to the file header, which counts as a file change. So you get a dialog prompt to save or not before closing out.
    • With a regular Save As to a different file format, it behaves like Export As; just close out the original because it will not be altered in any way. Again, just hit the X and that’s it.

Either way, there is never any need to “fake an edit” to close out. Just close it.

Hey, @Perfect_Nemus. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out. Based on the description, this behavior could be expected, but I’ve been unable to reproduce it.

Please share a video of the issue and the system info from Photoshop Help > System Info. Copy and paste it into a text document, then upload and attach it here.

Please test and confirm if Photoshop (Beta) has an issue. You can get Photoshop (Beta) from the Creative Cloud > Apps tab > Beta Apps section.

    Thanks!
