Question

Working on a large file (8gB), but Photoshop is using 100+ GB's of space.

I'm piecing together a bunch of smaller photos to make a very large map. The canvas size is 100x100, which is currently sitting at about 8GBs. I have 120GBs of free space. When I have this file open and I'm adding more photos to it, it ends up taking all but about 2GBs of my space. I then have to delete stuff that I'd rather not be deleting in order to get it saved (roughly 25GBs worth), even though the file is only 8GBs. If I re-open it and start working in it again, Photoshop will then take up the new space I just opened up for saving the file. I don't understand why this takes so much space when the file is a fraction of the size. What can I do to avoid this?

100 x 100 what?  Pixels, centimeters, inches?

And what is the PPI?

How  many layers do you have?

Have you merged any layers yet?

Have you applied adjustments or filters & if so how many?

Everything you do to an image takes memory.  And everything extra adds more to the resource load.  Do you have an external drive you can use as a scratch disk?

Hi Nancy! Thanks so much for the help.

100 inches x 100 inches is the canvas size.

It's 300 DPI.

Each photo I'm merging is a new layer. As of now I'm at about 32 photos.

I've "linked" layers, but I haven't merged them. Not sure if there's a difference.

I have not applied any filters.

I understand that it takes memory, but 120+GB's of memory seems excessive. Is it storing multiple instances of the same image? And why does it need 30GB's to save if it's only 8GB's?

No, I don't have an external drive. I might have to go get one though, it seems.

Inches???  OMG.  That's 833.33 square feet.  That's not just big.  It's humongous.  That's bigger than some homes.    And at 300ppi no wonder you're having trouble.

What exactly are you creating?  A banner for the side of a skyscraper or aircraft carrier?

And at what distance is this banner going to be viewed by people?
