Working Space Gray When Not Active

In the most current version of PS, if I click outside the program, the entire working space goes gray. You can't see anything. To be able to see your work again, you have to click back on the file, then onto another layer or tool and the working space reappears. This is frustrating when working within two programs. I can't see my PS work for reference while editing files in another program or even viewing something online. I work on a Mac in case that's relevant. I also don't have this problem with the version before the current one.

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
