Question

"Adobe Elements has stopped working" during DV capture

After not using Elements for a couple of months, I recently tried to open a new project and cannot capture DV footage when adding media. I can add pictures and music, but every time I try to add DV material, I get the message, "Adobe Elements 12 has stopped working, a problem caused the program to stop working correctly."

I tried the below tactics without any success:

I removed contents in media cache files (also removed every item in media cache folder)
unistalled and reinstalled program many times
updated graphics card drivers
reverted graphics card to 2016 setting (tried all 3 versions listed below)
reinstalled with a different user name
did disk cleanup and defrag
removed Adobe Premiere Elements pref file
switched project destination from C:\ to external drive
right-clicked on program icon to run as administrator
removed Adobe Flash player and rebooted

Dell XPS 8700 desktop

Windows 10 64-bit

Intel Core i7-4790 3.60gHz CPU

12 MB Ram

Using NVIDIA GeForce GTX745 display card with

6.27.17 update to 22.21.13.8476

2.23.17 update to 22.21.13.7878

12.29.16 update to 21.21.13.7653

Any assistance from an Adobe Moderator that has prior experience with this common issue would be very much appreciated.

Assuming you've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the program, I have no idea what more you can do -- other than capture with WinDV rather than Premiere Elements.

Obviously Premiere Elements is the weak link then.

There's a trick that used to work in Windows 7. I've never had to use it with Windows 10, but it's worth a try.

Go to your Device Manager and open the IEEE1394 Host Controller. Right-click on the VIA 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller and select Update Driver. On the Update Driver screen, select Browse my Computer for Driver Software then, on the next screen, select Let Me Pick From a List.

If there is a Legacy driver listed there, select it. If not, there are likely a couple of drivers listed. See if selecting one of the other listed drivers makes a difference.

I had two controllers listed and changed to the other but, unfortunately, this did not help.

And you've run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter?

And you've tried creating a new folder to save your video into?

Are you able to capture if you use the free download WinDV?

Yes, I did Disk Cleanup and Defrag.

Tried creating new destination folders without success.

Yes, I tried WinDV and was able to capture video and then transfer it into the Premiere Elements project for editing.

yes, using Add Media tool from miniDV with firewire. I tried to use my external drive to capture the video rather than using the default folder without any success either.

I have 676 GB of free space on my hard drive.

Assuming you're using Premiere Elements' Add Media tool to capture your video from a miniDV camcorder over a FireWire connection -- what happens if you try to capture to another location other than the default folder?

(I'm also assuming you've got hundreds of gigs of space left on your hard drive and that you've recently run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter.)
