Problem resolved by downloading APE with update instead of installing from disk.

When the update inside the program doesn't work the only way you will be able to update is what is marked as correct

Download the 'trial' and enter your serial number to activate

John, thank you very much for this swift and helpful reply.

Last night I re-downloaded the entire program and all seems to be fine now.

But this is a really poor show from Adobe!

I am trying to update from App. Starting the app in normal way causes the update offer to appear on screen. The button to update including the option arrow alongside it changes like it should when clicked but the update does not start. The screen locks up. Even the Task Manager becomes inaccessible.

Other programs will run, but elements is stuck.

Cannot clear the update offer panel, so cannot run the application in its present version.

Very poor support from Adobe.

I have exactly same problem as Alan:

This is not a correct answer in my case.
