Alpha Glow effect added to a videomerged clip causes video crash in Premiere Elements 2023 for Mac

Why is the video display going completely wonky after I add "Alpha Glow" effect to a clip that already has a Videomerge effect?   Never had this issue with Premiere Elements 2021 or prior versions.
