Question

Apple phone movies .mov not accepted

Recently I was on a vacation and followingup to make a video on my computer.  I have a later model Apple phone.  However, this time around, the .mov files being downloaded into Adobe Premiere (ver 2021) will not be accepted.... statement says that they are not compatible.  I could do it before but no longer.  I reinstalled the software, but that did not fix the problem.  Someone said to change all the .mov to .mp4 (Youtube) and it worked for him.  I do not want to do that as I do not know what the ultimate damage, if any, will be.

Can anyone help me fix this problem.  I am anxious to get a new video out and my time available to do that is very precious lately.

Thanks,   Paul

Adding to Bob's and John's posts is another suggestion.   "Not compatible" means Premiere Elements can't find what it needs to edit your phone footage.

The coding and decoding systems (or "CODECS") at the consumer and phone level are labeled "H.264" and the newer "H.265".   Apple likes to use H.265 and calls it "HEVC".   Most Apple computers have it built in and most Windows systems do not.    The H.265 codec is not included with Premiere Elements because it is assumed it should be part of the host system.   John's suggestion to use Mediainfo will show which codec was used by your phone.

If you use a newer iPhone it comes with HEVC set as a default.  It can be changed to the more common H.264 in the settings system.  The choice will be labeled something like "Most compatible".

Existing footage can be fixed in at least two ways if changing the file name does not work.  One is to install the "H.265" codec.  It is purchased from the Microsoft Windows store for a dollar.  It is not always easy to install but works once you do.   The other is to convert your existing footage to H.264 using software like the free Handbrake program.

MOV is a wrapper, what is inside YOUR wrapper - Exactly what is INSIDE the video you are editing?
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the program below
Free program to get file information for PC/Mac http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download
- a MediaInfo tutorial https://youtu.be/Ivy9ckSX1M0
- when you analyze your file in MediaInfo and post a screen shot in the forum, do so in TREE view
- post your information IN your message, not as an attachment that someone would have to download
.
Does your video use a Variable Frame Rate? See https://community.adobe.com/t5/Premiere-Pro/Variable-frame-rate-video-with-Premiere-Pro/td-p/4601935
If yes, use https://handbrake.fr/ open source transcoder/converter to convert to Constant Frame Rate

Also... is your video h264 or h265?

Make a copy of the mov, change the extension of the copy to mp4, and see if it works.

No harm done.
