Question

audio and video not syncing - different question that previeous

I'm having a problem with my video and audo becoming out of sync and, even though there have been others posting about this here, my case is a little different and I don't know what to do.

I'm using my Android MotoZ phone for video with "Open Camera" app as the video recording app.  I'm not using the default camera app that comes with the phone.

I want to preface this by saying this problem is new.  It just started happening last month - December 2021.  I have been using the same camera, same app, and Premier Elements all along, for at least 1 year, probably nore - with no problems.

Now, when I encode and save the video, it starts fine but as the video plays,  the audio gets more out of sync with the video.

I've tried uploading my saved video back into premier elements and it plays out of sync in the software.  I use Windows Media player to review the videos but I also tried uploading to Youtube to see if the problem was still there and it was.

Finally, after searching here, I found a solution that worked -  and that is, to run the clips through handbrake and encode them with a constant frame rate.

So since this worked, I'm thinking my problem is that the camera is recording at a variable frame rate.  However, why would this be now, when in the past I had no problems?

My camera app has a frame rate setting, so I set it to 30fps, thinking maybe that would help.  It didn't.

Could it be my camera app is updating in the background with out me knowing and now this is happening?  Could it be that photo elements is updating in the background and now this is happening?

Could it be my computer, which used to be fine for video editing, is now too slow.  I'm editing on a 3-4 year old HP laptop, Windows 10, with only 4gb of ram (don't know how my processor speed compares to the software requirements, but when I bought it, it was good for what I needed).  I see the newer premier elements system requirements is 8gb of ram I think.

The thing is, I cannot live with this problem. It needs to be  100% solved, fixed without question... whether it's a new camera, new phone, new editing software, or some other fix.  I don't want to outlay the cash right now for new anything. Why would I need to do this anyway when in the past, everything worked great?

Running each clip through "handbrake" takes wayyyy too long and seriously affecting my productivity.  I film and edit roughly 3 videos per week, which is doable but I can't reach that goal while dealing with this problem.

Thanks
Tony

Software changes over time: as in OS, editing software, software used on a phone etc.

You can batch convert in Handbrake.

Thank you for your replies.
So far, after hours of research, I'm still at a standstill.  In fact, yesterday I tried editing a new video and after importing clip #1, probably 30 seconds, the intro, which played fine in Windows Media player, and then did playback fine in Premier Elements - after I trimed the first 5 seconds of the clip, it now either plays very, very choppy or the video is frozen while the audio plays.

I've been using Premier Elements for YEARS, literally, and love the program and have never experienced this.  Never.  I need to get back up today and may try other editing software.

Does anyone know if you can actually talk with someone at adobe?
Thanks.

Years ago, we did not have phones that made video which are highly compressed and not very suited to be edited.

Years ago we had tape camera.s. with only 1 to 5 compression.

Your laptop is way underpowered to edit such modern files.

General rules is when upgrading camera so does the software and hardware.

That is the reality of things.

If you want the ultimate shooting and editing performans get an Iphone, a Mac and FCP.

Sorry for the typo in the subject line.  I tried to fix but it seems once posted, you can't edit or redo your post.

Ann's suggestion should keep you going.

You may be able to fix it in your Moto Z.  I looked up the instructions to the Open Camera App.  (https://opencamera.org.uk/help.html

It says:

Video frame rate (approx) - If set to a value other than "default", the camera will try to match this frame rate.

  • This is very approximate, as frame rate depends on many factors such as your device and lighting conditions, and this is only a "recommendation" to the camera driver, so there is no guarantee that the resultant video's frame rate will match with the requested value.
  • Even if video recording is successful, if achieving a specific FPS is desired, please check the resultant video's frame rate rather than assuming that it was achieved.
  • For best results (especially for 120fps or higher), please set Settings/"Camera API" to "Camera2 API".

The best way to check the frame rate setting is with the (free) MediaInfo program.  In the "tree view" it will show if the frame rate is variable even though the target is 30.   It also might be that the frame rate needs to be set in the host phone's camera settings.   There may be a "most compatable" setting in the phone.

Good luck.
