can the thumbnails in organizer be stored on an external hard drive

Thanks in advance for any help.

My laptop harddrive had about 60 gigs free space.  I opened Organizer and imported the pictures and videos on my external hard drive.  It devoured all available space.  Is there a way to store the thumbnails of the photos and videos on an external drive as opposed to the internal drive of my laptop.

I am working on a Mac with version 13.  I can upgrade to 15 if that would make a difference.
