I am trying to change an M4A file to an MP3 in order to edit it in Adobe Premiere Elements 18. When I drop the file into the editior it says: Importer has reported a generic error message.

Thanks for any help

Don't convert it to mp3.  Convert it to wav.  Premiere Elements sometimes behaves wonky with mp3 files.

"M4A" suggests it might be from Apple through iTunes.  If so, you may be running into copyright/lock issues from Apple that will block use in software like Premiere Elements.   Another (free) program that may help is Audacity.  It is a highly rated audio editing program.

If PrE won't work with the file you will have to use another program to do the conversion

I'm not sure, but VLC may do that http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

Or find some other conversion program
