You cannot set the transition default to Left.

Besides, if the clip has not been properly trimmed you cannot always set the transition to left or it will use duplicate frames.

To change the type of transition, go to the Transitions panel and right-click on the transition you want to use.

To change the duration of your transitions, go to the program's preferences (under the Edit menu on a PC) and set the duration on the General page.
