Closing gaps created when decreasing photo duration

I'm using Premiere Elements 2019 to create a wedding video, which includes pictures and music. When I decrease the duration for multiple pictures, I end up with gaps between them. "Delete and close gap" is grayed out. I discovered if I first delete the music from the audio track and then change (decrease) the duration of the pictures, gaps are not inserted. Is there a better way? It seems silly to delete the music, change the duration of pictures, and then re-add the music as I edit the video to match the length of the pictures (video track) with the length of the music (audio track).

Correct answer Steve Grisetti

Your screen captures don't show your whole timeline, so I can only speculate.

But it sounds like rippling works if you only have one song on a parallel track. It will not work if you have more than one song on a parallel track.

Thanks, Steve. I ended up removing the last 2 of 3 songs, and now rippling woks as expected. I'll add those songs back after I have the duration and transitions complete.

P.S. Your training videos are excellent!

Is music on the Music track the only thing on any other video or audio track?

Generally the Video 1/Audio 1 track will ripple you as add and remove footage, but this sometimes won't happen if you've media on other tracks or more than one song on your music track.

Can you post a screen capture of your timeline?

Thanks so much for the reply. Pictures (no video) are on Video 1 and music is on Audio 1. Nothing is on any other video or audio track.

Decreasing the duration of pictures from 5 sec to 2 sec leaves 3 sec gaps. "Delete and close gap" is grayed out. If I delete the music, the duration can be decreased without creating gaps. It's as if the pictures are linked to the music, but I don't have them linked.
