Downloading files to an external Hard drive has corrupted the ext. Hard Drive. ??

I copied some video of my colleagues band onto his hard drive via Organizer.  The transfer went as predicted.

My colleague called in despair indicating that his Hard Drive is now corrupted and he cannot access anything on his drive.

Does anyone have suggestions to preserve and repair the data?

Any ideas of what could have happened?
