Drone .mov needs conversion-no program works

Hello, just installed premiere elements and want to add a drone video shot in .mov format to my time-line. I used several converters and the best, while getting it loaded into the timeline came out distorted as in the numbers on houses were hard to read and there is a lot of movement in the scenes.

Is there a good free converter and one that will convert without causing so much loss of resolution?

You should be able to set the resolution of your output under the Picture tab in HandBrake.

Beyond that, I'm not sure what else to tell you other than what I've already said.

Meantime, if you'd like to post your video to a site, like Dropbox, where we can download it and play with it, we'll be to do that.

The challenge is most likely that the video is not standard, editable 4K, which is 3840x2160. It's a format called DCI (Digitial Cinema), which is 4096x2160 -- a format that's compatible with 4K monitors and projectors but which can give video editing programs problems. DCI video is most often used to squeeze commercial movies down to fit standard 16:9 TVs.

Most of what's here should be pretty editable in Premiere Elements. The challenge is the non-standard resolution for 4K -- 4096x2160 rather than the standard 3840x2160 px that Premiere Elements edits.

You can try converting the file using Handbrake, the easiest converter I know of. Set Handbrake's output settings container to MP4 and set the Size (under the Picture tab) to 3840x2160 -- or, if you don't mind reducing the resolution, to 1920x1080. Under the Video tab, set the video codec to H.264 (x264), frame rate to 30 and ensure the frames are set to Constant Framerate rather than Variable Frame Rate.

But to me, that seems like a lot of work, every time you want to edit your footage. Did your drone come with a video editor or video processor?

So before you goo deeply into things, just try installing Quicktime 7 and see if that makes any difference in your performance.

Converting should always be your last resort.

    Steve,

    Thanks, I will try tomorrow.

BTW, I really appreciate your lessons on Lynda. They're very easy to learn from and instructive. I bought your book from Amazon.

What make and model drone is the footage coming from?

You may not need to. And don't do it if you don't.

Which version of the program are you using on what operating system?

Also, open one of your MOVs in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Tree and copy the report it displays and paste it to this forum.

Once we know what we're dealing with, we can better make recommendations.

    Steve,

    Thanks,

    Windows 10

    Premiere Elements 15

I was able to open in the tree of mediainfo, how do you copy the report?

In MediaInfo, use the third button down the left side to output a .txt file of the report.

Open this .txt file in Notepad and then just copy and paste the information to a forum post.

BTW, do you have Quicktime 7 installed on your computer? You'll need it to edit many MOV files.
