Question

Editing and assembling clips from two different recordings of the same scene in Premiere Elements 2018.

I'm very new to Premiere Elements 2018 so please be gentle with me.

I have two video recordings of an event, 30 minutes long, but taken from different viewing angles. They both load into Elements 2018 independently and run OK.

I want to assemble a video incorporating selected scenes from both recordings, alternating as appropriate to make the finished video more interesting.

It appears (unless I am mistaken - please correct me if I am wrong) that I can only work on one of the recordings at any one time so I'll need to edit that recording to extract clips from it and save them, and then do the same with the second recording.

I haven't yet discovered by reading the User Guide how (and where) I can extract, give a name, and then save the various clips that I will need to build the edited video.

Ideally I'd like to be able to save all of the clips to a working file so that I can select and insert the ones that I need into the working video at the appropriate places.

How do I go about this?  Any assistance would be much appreciated.

- Dave.

Bill's method will certainly work, of course.

But I just have to say once more that if you're going to do this type of editing, using a tool that was designed for doing it will make it about 100 times easier. Trust me on this. I've done it both ways, and trying to make a tool like this do something it's not designed to do is an exercise in frustration.

With all due respect to Bill. Download one of the free trials of any program I recommended and see how easy it is with a multicam editor. I did a first draft edit of a four-camera shoot for a wedding in pretty much real time. And, if I changed my mind about a cut or a camera angle, it only took a click or drag to revise it.

So it's up to you. I used to work in my bicycle with a butterknife and a pair of plyers. A screwdriver and wrenches work so much better.

    Steve,

I agree.  But the OP wrote that he was "stuck" with his recent purchase, had only one project to do and had the time.

    Hi Bill,

Very many thanks for suggesting a work-around for my editing problem. I'm still slowly working my way through the Premiere Elements 2018 on-line help pages but haven't yet found any mention of how to create and display Video 2 (and Audio 2) channels on the timeline and then put my second video there.  Can you tell me how you managed to do this please?

I only need one sound track anyway since the two videos are front and back in-flight camera views of a 30 minute trip I made recently in a WW2 2-seat Spitfire, and both of them just carry the same (lovely) noises from the Merlin engine, so no lip-sync is required.

    TIA -  Dave.

Premiere Elements does not edit multicam video. There are ways to kind of do it in Premiere Elements, but it's a lot of clunky work.

Premiere Pro, of course, includes a multicam editor.

In the under-$100 category, Vegas Movie Studio 15 and CyberLink PowerDirector 16 Ultimate both have multicam editors.

Personally, I would not try to edit multicam in Premiere Elements. It's not worth the heartache.

Very many thanks Steve for your comments.

Unfortunately having recently paid out to purchase Premiere Elements 2018 I'm now stuck with it and, since I've only this one editing job to do, I really can't justify paying out again to buy a more sophisticated program.

Since I have time on my hands and am not under any pressure to complete this job asap, if you've got the time and are willing to explain it briefly, I'd really like to know what the 'clunky' way to do my editing job would be,

    Many thanks  -  Dave.

I'm not Steve!  I don't know anything about "multi camera" editors.  So, I do it in Premiere Elements.

    Try this....

Put the primary video with the best audio track on Video 1.  Put the secondary video on Video 2.  Delete the audio from Audio 2.

Premiere Elements "sees" from the top down.  So, cut holes in Video 2 to "see" Video 1.  It also "hears" from the top down.  Since you've deleted the audio from the upper track, you only have the primary audio.

To get the audio off of the secondary video, select it, right click and pick Unlink Audio and  Video, then select only the audio and delete it.

A variation is to leave the secondary audio in place and cut the holes.  The audio from the upper will play.  That can work better if syncing lips with speech!

Someday I'm going to learn Premiere Pro and find out how "multi camera" is supposed to work!
