Elements 10 will not open .mpg.scn file

I have recently had to completely reinstall my windows 10 OS.

After reinstalling all my files I now find that when trying to reload projects I receive the message that "This type of file is not supported,or the required is not installed."

I have installed the windows 10 codec pack.

Any help on this problem would be appreciated.

This file is not Elements related.

If you want to open an elements project you need to look for *.prel.

On a side note: NEVER install a codec pack on an editing machine. I can mess up your good codec. Everything you need is either in Windows or comes with Elements.

It's not exactly clear what you are trying to do or what the error message is. An mpg.scn file is probably a file that is used to create pointers to scenes in a video file. Some NLE (video editing) programs can detect different scenes in a video tape and will allow each scene to have a thumbnail which can be viewed separately in the playback viewer. They are not essential and can usually be recreated if the files are deleted. There is absolutely no reason to import such a file into the Organizer.

Sorry I have taken so long to reply to your help.

To elaborate on my problem.

I had to completely reinstall windows 10 and in so doing all my files were deleted. Fortunately I had backed everything up to a separate external drive. After copying these files back to the HDD none of my projects would load and received the message that "This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed."

After your reply I reloaded all clips from the original material and could load projects. Quite a time consuming task.

How did the original clips become detached or I am not filing correctly?

I have difficulty in understanding how “Premiere” files the various sections of a project. Please can you direct me to a tutorial on this particular subject?

I note your comments that I had posted to “Elements” forum instead of “Premiere” forum. I have looked in “Premiere” forum but cannot find my post there perhaps I am being stupid in my old age.

There is Premiere Elements, Photoshop Elements, Photoshop and Premiere Pro. All four are different products with different forum section.

All video editing software works with building links to where the source clips are. If they are moved, deleted or altered, the link is broken and you have to reconnect them. I don't know of a specific tutorial for that. However, it appears that you accomplished this if you got the projects working.

Your original post included, "This type of file is not supported,or the required is not installed." That is a different situation. All video clip files need an interpreter or "codec". When Premiere Elements 10 was current, it shared codecs supplied by Apple when Quicktime was installed. Quicktime for Windows has been withdrawn by Apple and current versions of Premiere Elements is more independent.

The short version is that Premiere Elements 10 may not ever work well on Windows 10 computers. Running such old software on a current computer includes the risk that projects will fail with little recourse.
