HDMI TO USB capture

Hello!

I have been trying to copy some very old VHS tapes, for a mate. I have a Samsung DVD-V5600 DVD VCR unit if I connect it to my Panasonic DMR-EX77 DVR the picture on the tv is very good, and copies made to DVD work well. However, some of the tapes have anti-copy protection so will not copy. I purchased a device that is supposed to copy VHS to my PC, but it doesn't work very well, lots of pink & green stripes and dropouts, which I thought was down to the copy protection. but it's the same on non-protected tapes. I thought that if I connect the HDMI output of the Panasonic to an HDMI to USB capture device will PRE15 see the device and allow me to capture the video?

It may be that copies for personal use can be legal. I am not qualified for that judgement nor can I suggest that you make copies that would be illegal.

A work around on my computer might be the recording capabilites of the Nvidia graphics card. It will record anything that displays on the screen. So, if you can get the tape to play, it might be recordable.

I don't think it's illegal to copy tapes that are no longer available as either VHS or DVD.

The tapes in question are 25-year-old woodturning instructional videos that my mate purchased in 1995.

Anyway, I also have some of my own VHS holiday videos that I made in the '90s that I would like to copy. If PRE15 will not see the USB device, will PRE9 as I have both. I don't want to spend 20 quid on a device that will not work with PRE. My DMR-EX77 has an HDMI output and I can feed the Samsung to the front input.

Premiere Elements will not and has never interfaced with a USB capture device. Few video editing programs do.

Capture over USB is best done using a third-party device and program, like the Diamond VC500. I highly recommend the VC500 because the video it captures (if you use the settings in my tutorial) is compatible with Premiere Elements.
