how can I rotate video and keep the original resolution

How can I rotate a video in Premiere Elements and keep the original resolution? the standard rotatioon maintains the original resolution and cuts the video off.

example: I have a gopro video. It is at 3840 horizontal by 2160 vertical. When I rotate it using the Applied Effects command, what I want is a video that is 2160 horizontal by 3840 vertical with all the data. Instead I get a 3840x2160 video with black bars on the sides and the top and bottom of my video cut off to fit the 3840 down to a 2150 resolution. I can scale the image down to see the top/bottom but now I am losing quality.

Is there a way to rotate and keep the original sizes just in the new orientation?

It won't let me attach screenshots, I don't know why, I will see if I can add them later

Correct answer Steve Grisetti

thanks, that works great!

interestingly, the inserted video clip does not fill the project space. Am I missing a step?

My steps:

create a new project - portrait 2160x3840

add media, select clip (3840x2160)

insert clip into timeline

select applied effect and rotate clip.

Note how it is smaller than the video size. Is it shrinking the clip during the insertion step?

Try this. But it will only work if you make this preference setting before you add the video to your project, so you'll need to first clear this video from your project.

Go to the program's preferences (under the Edit menu) and, on the General page, uncheck Scale to Frame Size. Then import the video into your project, put it on your timeline and rotate it.

You can't rotate the video in your project and rotate the project settings at the same time. Your project settings are separate from the video in your project.

If your entire video is one aspect ratio, you can set the project up to that aspect ratio -- say 2160x3840. But you can't have part of the video 16:9 and part of it 9:16.

Thanks Steve, I will try rotating the Project. I didn't even know that could be done!
