Question

How do I activate an Mpeg2 component for my Premiere Elements 4?

I have an old program of Adobe Photoshop 6/Premiere Elements 4 that I have used for years. I just recently finished putting together a picture/video project, and when I went to burn it to DVD, a box came up and said I have to activate the Mpeg 2 component. The website they gave me is no longer active, and nobody seems to have an answer. I contacted customer support, but after a 90 minute wait, they sent me to the forum, and nobody seems to have a program this old or know how to activate it. I don't want to throw out my project- it's our trip to Europe, and I really want this DVD made. Can anybody help me?

Older versions of the program included a number of components that needed to activate as you were using the program. The version of the program you are using is nearly 10 years old and the online activation systems have long been discontinued.

You can try downloading the free trial of version 15. Some people have found that it installs these missing components and you will be able to edit with your older version of the program.

However, be aware that version 4 was extremely limited in terms of the video formats it will edit. In fact, the program can really only efficiently edit tape-based miniDV and HDV video. Modern formats like AVCHD and video from smartphones and other sources will be very difficult if not impossible to edit. Particularly if you are using a 64-bit operating system like Windows 7, 8 or 10, you will find editing is much smoother, faster and easier on version 12 or later.
