Question

How to 1-to-1 copying of the video with just the audio changed to stereo Handbrake to Elements?

I used my trusty Panasonic HC-V727 (HD) camcorder during a recent vacation and subsequently discovered that I must have inadvertently changed the audio setting from “2ch” (i.e. stereo) to 5.1 (since corrected).

I read that Premiere Elements (I have Version 2021 on a WIN10 PC) does not work well (true – on inserting a clip into a new project the audio trace is not shown) and given that I wish to also include clips from a second device (this with stereo audio) it seems I should convert the HC-V727 clips via Handbrake.

The files from the HC-V727 are of filetype “.m2ts” - see below for the data from MediaInfo. When I ran a file through Handbrake with the default settings the audio had been converted to stereo but the resulting file (type .m4v) was only a quarter of the size of the original. I fear a possible loss of video quality due to not using the best presets – also the mini graphic of the clip did not appear in the timeline of a test project – but the preview screen looked OK.

Any advice from an experienced Handbrake user on what the appropriate presets would be would be gratefully received. Ideally I'd like a 1-to-1 copying of the video with just the audio changed to stereo.

One curious thing is that after conversion via Handbrake the first two frames of each clip are black.

Clearly its no problem to remove them from the timeline, however in the Project Assets pull-down all converted clips appear black.  Not a show-stopper but a bit annoying.

Thanks Steve - thats most helpful.

I re-ran Handbrake on one of my files - using "Framerate: same as source" - sounded like a good idea.

Its still does not show the mini graphic of the clip did not appear in the timeline of PE so I need to try a few things.

It seems that Handbrake changed their user interface since you recorded your video so you might like to consider an update.

It's not mandatory to use a preset. You have to tweak the parameters anyway.

After everything is set you can save to your own preset.

There is a slider for image quality in the video section. Setting it all the way to the right will give a lossless file but huge.

If you want to know how much you have lost.

Superimpose both images (source and converted one ) in the timeline and turn on Difference in the Blend Mode (opacity) of the top converted image.

Total black means no image quality loss at all.

m2ts is just a wrapper as is mp4. All that count is the compression.

1 on 1 with no encoding means smart render.

Might want to have a go at the trial. Dont kown if one can change the audio, but guessing you can.
