How to superimpose w/o greenscreen and no loss of opacity?

Question

I have been a heavy user of PE since 2011 and try to learn more, have Classroom In A Book. In this case, the book does not get through my thick skull.

Have read pp. 141-148 "Creating a Picture-in-Picture Overlay" to "Compositing Two Clips Using Videomerge"

and just don't get it.

I want to superimpose many, many shapes, without loosing Opacity. So, could someone send me in the direction of understanding how to do it? Videomerge?

(not even quite getting Videomerge)

Let's take a shot made with Photoshop Element of the letter A, how do I superimpose it on another shot made without a camera of letter Z.

The letters are White and the background is Black.

I don't quite understand your question. Why would superimposing many shapes have anything to do with your opacity?

Each track operates independently, and Videomerge and Chroma Key work on each individual clip.

If you just put each clip over the other, each on a separate track, and Videomerge each. they should each become transparent.
