Import Blu Ray

I've just upgraded from Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 2018 to 2023.

I'm looking for a way to import home Blu Ray movies that I made years ago using Pinnacle Studio, to save as .MP4 files for TV viewing via my NAS drive.

The Elements Organiser will import the video files, but there is no audio on playback. Is this beyond the realms of Elements? I've also tried a trial version of  'MakeMKV'. This works fine, but Premiere Elements doesn't seem to support .MKV files. I could now look for an MKV to MP4 converter, but a bit of a faff. Any 3rd party (preferably free or cheap) utilities that anyone could recommend to RIP my Blu Rays to Windows PC for editing/saving as MP4s?

Thanks in advance for any help, and apologies if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything when searching the forum.

Correct answer Ann Bens

You don't need to convert the files.

Put the m2ts files from the disk on your hard drive and import (double-click in the Project Assets)

Give it some time to load, before doing anything.

You can also try to change the extension to mpg before importing.

As for the NAS try and change the extention of the m2ts to mp4.

I have no idea of the file structure of a BluRay disc, but have you tried copying the files to your hard drive and converting them from there? I know that the files on a DVD may be copied to a computer (at least home made ones, I don't know about a studio disc with copy protection)

The https://handbrake.fr/ open source transcoder/converter may read those files... I don't have any, so don't know

Thanks very much for your help. Some very good suggestions there 🙂

In the meantime, I'm trying 'VLC Media Player' to convert the files, but I do recall using Handbrake in the past, so will give that a go as well.

The BluRay disk contains .m2ts files - one for each chapter and one for the main menu of the Blu Ray. These 'MPEG-2' files can be played in Windows 11, and include both the audio and video. Premiere Elements does try to import these files directly, but seems to crash on larger files. Best way forward at the moment seems to be using handbrake to convert the .m2ts files to .MP4, and using these MP4s as the source media files in Premiere Elements. Thanks again for your suggestions.
