In PE Premier 14, Export/Share in HD results in messed up crops

Hi, I'm trying to saving a video project using Export/Share to a high def end product.  When I save as Quick Export, it looks great, but fuzzier than I would like.  When I choose ANY type of HD option whether its in the TV, Mobile, or Computer option under the Devices tab, the crops I have made to both stills and clips take on a life of their own -- almost all are cropped at the wrong place, losing arms, legs, bodies, whatever. Driving me crazy!  I'm sure it must be user error.  Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks

Well, clearly your project settings are not even remotely close to your video specs, so that's contributing to the problems.

Are you saying that your video is 640x480 from an iPhone? So it's Quicktime video.

You can't change your project settings mid-way through a project, which is why your project settings listings are grayed out. The program will usually match the video specs of the first video you add to your timeline automatically. But, assuming you've placed a clip of your video at the beginning of your timeline, that apparently didn't happen. (Sometimes MOV files have complicated specs that the program can't read.)

    Try this:

    1) Resize your photos to 2500x1875 pixels (72 ppi). Better yet, save your original photos at full resolution, but save copies of your photos at this size. These reduced resolution videos will be the ones you use in your video project.

    2) Start a new project (File/New Project) and, on the New Project panel, click Settings and select the settings for 640x480 DSLR at 30p fps.

    3) Add some of this video and some photos to this project as an experiment and apply some of your effects.

    4) Click Export & Share. On the Export & Share panel, go to Devices/Custom and click Advanced Settings. Select H.264 as the format and, under the Video tab, click Match Source and click OK. Name your project settings (640x480 MP4). It will now always be available for you under your Custom options. Output your movie.

This may seem complicated and convoluted, but you are using some unusual source media.

But give it a try and see if your results are better.

    Steve,

Thanks! It will take me a few minutes to process what you’ve suggested.

In the meantime I have solved one problem by converted the web video from 15 fps to 30 fps to match the iphone video and replacing it in my project. This has solved one problem which is a constant changing of the timing of the web sourced video to coordinate the timing of the two iphone videos.

Next, I am thinking the crop function is really a mask, and depending on the layering of my various video layers, the mask is covering parts of the still images. By moving these images and videos to different layers, I’ve been able to solve that (at least for the Quick Export). I’m kind of doubting my solution will solve the problem for an HD export.

In stumbling across the function Videomerge, I’m wondering if there’s a way to make the mask transparent for the other surrounding images. Obviously, the mask would still need to function for the cropped image.

I’ll report back with any success

Try resizing the photos, per my suggestion above.

Roger that. Would the photos also impact the cropping of the three video clips or do the clips need to have similar pixel size? Sorry if that’s a dumb question!

I'll better be able to help you when you answer all of my questions.

Note that the size of the picture file is meaningless, when dealing with JPEGs. But I do need to know what the height and width measurements are of your photos, in pixels, and if they are larger than 2500x1875 pixels.

Sorry. Thought I had. You get up on the wrong side of bed today?

What model of camcorder is your video coming from? What is the video's format and resolution?

If you look under Premiere Elements' Edit menu and select Project Settings, what is listed on the General page?

Are you photos size to no larger than 2500x1875 pixels (72 ppi)?

What operating system are you using?

Can you post a sample of your crazy video output to YouTube and then link us to it so we can see what you're trying to describe?

    Steve,

    Thanks.

Using two clips from two different iphones and a third clip from another iphone that was used to broadcast over Facebook Live. I was able to recover the streamed clip from the FB replay. So those were my three video clips.

Photos were combo of both iphone photos at about 2 mb’s (and lower) at 72 dpi and a professional photographer sending me JPEGs of about 3-4 megs at 300 dpi.

    Using PEP 14.

    System is Windows 10 Home

Does the problem stem from the photos being too large?

    Thanks!

    Tom
