Also, what are the pixel sizes of the images?

If too large, you may have issues.

Check the Audio Hardware Preferences. Default Audio Input should be set to No Input.

Hoping to build on Bob's suggestion, you can also change some settings.  Try changing the Timeline Render Quality in General Preferences.   On the same page, you can try changing Hardware Acceleration and use of the GPU.   Another possibility is that your timeline preview needs to be "rendered".   This may be necessary if your timeline editing becomes complex or your source footage does not match your project settings.

You need to provide details for anyone to help - I have Premiere Elements 2021.4
