Moving clips after cutting

The following has occurred with me several times, and I can't seem to find a  solution. I bring in another video file that I have filmed. I have to trim it on both sides to find the area in the middle that I need. That's seemingly easy: I highlight the clip, and then hit the scissors icon. Then, I delete the unwanted part of my clip. But, then say the  unwanted part of the clip that I deleted is to the left (or earlier in the song) than the part that I'm keeping. If I then take the remaining shortened clip and try to move it to the left--by putting the cursor on the left border, hitting the Ctrl key, and moving it all by, ie, 4 seconds---I discover that instead of having this clip play 4 seconds earlier, I instead find that the part that I had just deleted becomes active again and THAT is what I hear 4 seconds earlier.

If that is not clear, I can  try to s ay it again differently.

    Great response, Bill.

    Though I still would like to know why LNovik was holding down the Ctrl key. What is doing it supposed to do that not holding it down will not do?

      I'm not sure why you're holding down the Ctrl key and dragging on the left end of a clip to move it.

      To move a clip, you click to select it and just drag.

      I would not have thought of holding down the Ctrl key unless somebody else (in this site) had told me. I did try it yesterday (with not holding down the clip, with mixed results. However instead of dragging clips, after I had deleted material from either side---and then worrying that instead of the new  clip data being moved, the  previously deleted data would be be reintroduced--I simply "cut" the renaming clip, moved the timeline to where I wanted the clip to then go, and then hit paste on some menu on  top. This seemed to   work well.

      I should add that a few times I did try to  drag a  clip one way or another, and I couldn't move it at all--either with the Ctrl key or without.

      LNovak,

      Keep in mind that "editing" in the timeline only sets markers for the output process.  Nothing is ever actually deleted.  Instead, "in points" and "out points" are set.  Even "cuts" set them.  To demonstrate that, isolate a clip, cut it, grab the ends and drag. 

      As you know, timeline editing has subtle nuances, especially when working with a music track.  I did a search on YouTube for "adobe premiere elements video editing tutorial" and got a lot of options.  One favorite was listed.  You might want to watch invest 10 minutes in watching this one:  Premiere Elements tutorial: Adding clips, slice, trim, and ripple edits | lynda.com - YouTube
