Mystery sliders on timeline

PRE 12 and Windows 10. Timeline has 2 sliders, shaped like hot dogs standing vertically. I cannot find an explanation for their purpose. By trial and error I found that they can be used to measure elapsed time between any 2 points on the timeline. Is there more to it than that? Thanks.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, they are Work Area Bar Brackets. Once I had a name, Google found what I needed.
